New Gifts for Drum Builders (2026)

I keep a main gift guide of the things I own and have used for years. This page is the new stuff for drum builders: tools and supplies I've found for the shop recently. If you're shopping for someone who builds drums this year, start here.
Shopping for a drummer instead? Those picks have their own page: new gifts for drummers.
Each pick shows a rough price range, since prices move around a lot before the holidays.
Heads up: many product links on this page are Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through one, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Full FTC disclosure here.
The Makedrums Drum Building Suite
Whether they're about to build their first drum or they've been at it for years, this is what I wrote for exactly that person: step-by-step chapters and HD video tutorials covering everything from shells and edges to finishing and hardware.
Under $25
Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil
Under $25. It's sold as a gunstock finish, but it works just as well on a drum shell. You wipe it on by hand and it builds to a gloss, with no spray gear needed. A perfect stocking stuffer for a builder.
DrumMaker's lug layout video
Under $25. A short video on laying out and drilling lug holes, including offset layouts. Cheap enough to be a stocking stuffer, and it saves at least one shell from a badly placed hole.
Tom layout and drilling video from DrumMaker
$25 to $100
Whiteside 2292 chamfer bit
$25 to $100. A bearing-guided 45° chamfer bit with a 1/4" shank, so it fits a trim router. A 45° chamfer is the standard way to cut the inner bevel of a bearing edge, and Whiteside bits stay sharp a long time.
Wixey digital angle gauge
$25 to $100. Stave and segment shells live or die on the saw angle. This sticks to the blade and reads the tilt to a tenth of a degree, so the joints actually close up.
Bessey strap clamp
$25 to $100. A 23-foot strap clamp that wraps around a stave shell or a set of reinforcement rings and pulls everything tight while the glue sets.

Rockler circle-cutting jig for trim routers
$25 to $100. Cuts perfect circles from 6 to 36 inches with a compact router. Use it for reinforcement rings, bearing-edge jig bases and head templates.
Rockler trim router circle jig
Rockler steam bending kit
$25 to $100. For the builder who wants to try a steam-bent solid shell or wooden hoops. It comes with the steam generator, hose and plans for the steam box.

Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C
$25 to $100. A one-coat oil finish with no VOCs that comes clear or in a range of colors. It's a nice step up from wiping on stain, especially on a figured shell.

Mitutoyo digital caliper
$25 to $100. Shell wall thickness, edge flats, lug screw lengths: a builder measures something every day. The cheap calipers drift; a Mitutoyo doesn't.
3M WorkTunes Bluetooth hearing protection
$25 to $100. Routers are loud, and so is the band you're building drums for. These are proper earmuffs with Bluetooth built in, so you can protect your hearing and still have music on.
A raw Keller maple shell
$25 to $100. A "build me a drum" gift. DrumMaker sells undrilled 6-ply Keller maple shells in all the common sizes, ready for edges, a snare bed and hardware.

A professional snare bed
$25 to $100. Snare beds are the one cut most home builders shouldn't try freehand, and the old jigs for it aren't made any more. Precision Drum will cut one for you: mail them the shell, and it comes back bedded properly.
Snare bed service from Precision Drum
$100 to $500
Dust Deputy cyclone
$100 to $500. It sits between the shop vac and the hose and catches most of the sanding dust before it clogs the filter. After a day of sanding shells, you'll notice the difference.
Incra Miter 1000SE
$100 to $500. A miter gauge that locks into exact angles. If you're cutting staves or segments on a table saw, this is how you get every piece the same.
Makita cordless compact router
$100 to $500. An 18V brushless trim router. Cutting bearing edges without a cord catching on the shell is worth more than you'd think.
DrumMaker DIY snare kit
$100 to $500. A 6.5x14 steel snare that arrives already edged, bedded and drilled, with all the hardware. It's a great first build, or a fun weekend for someone who has only built wood drums.
Festool ETS 125 sander
$100 to $500. Sanding between finish coats is where a lot of shell finishes go wrong. This small random-orbit sander is smooth, light and connects to a dust extractor.
$500 and up
Kreg precision router table
$500 and up. Most home builders cut bearing edges with the shell upside down on a router table. This is a solid, accurate one that'll also handle every other routing job in the shop.
Festool MFK 700 edge router
$500 and up. The premium version of a trim router, with a horizontal base that rides flat on an edge. If the builder in your life already has everything, this is a serious upgrade.
xTool F2 laser engraver
$500 and up. Make your own badges. The F2 engraves brass and aluminum, and it can mark a logo right onto a shell or a wood hoop. The cheaper F1 Lite handles wood and coated metal.
Makera Carvera Air desktop CNC
$500 and up. A named upgrade to the desktop CNC in the main gift guide. It changes its own tools, so you can carve badges, lug-drilling templates and edge jigs without babysitting it.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good gift for someone who builds drums?
Anything that makes a cleaner cut or a better finish: a chamfer bit or trim router for bearing edges, an angle gauge for stave shells, a good finishing oil, or a raw maple shell to build from. If they're getting serious, a laser engraver lets them make their own badges.
What's a good cheap gift for a drum builder?
A bottle of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil or DrumMaker's lug layout video. Both cost under $25, and both get used on the very next build.
